• Growing use of events - Overwhelming flood of events such as RFID tag data that is difficult to process in real time.

• Growing complexity of environments - Cannot be adequately be defined by traditional rules based systems which are too rigid and brittle.

• Growing need for real time knowledge - Discovering something has happened with data mining is a very useful ability but discovering that something ishappening can be vital and indeed many systems require nothing less.

• Growing need to be adaptive to changing environments - business changes, systems changes, infrastructure changes but changing a set of business or system rules is expensive and time consuming.

• Growing need to be dynamic in changing environments - Business also needs to be dynamic and be able to change from moment to moment with changing conditions.
